Choosing the right messaging system during your architectural planning is always a challenge, yet one of the most important considerations to nail.

As a developer, I write applications daily that need to serve lots of users and process huge amounts of data in real time. Spring Boot is a framework that allows me to go through my development process much faster and easier than before.

It has come to play a crucial role in my organization. As the number of our users quickly grew, we realized our apparent need for something that could process as many as 1, events per second. And since that moment, Kafka has been a vital tool in my pocket.

Why did I choose it, you ask? Based on my experience, I provide here a step-by-step guide on how to include Apache Kafka in your Spring Boot application so that you can start leveraging its benefits too.

I recommend using the Confluent CLI for your development to have Apache Kafka and other components of a streaming platform up and running. After reading this guide, you will have a Spring Boot application with a Kafka producer to publish messages to your Kafka topic, as well as with a Kafka consumer to read those messages. Contains a single broker installation of Kafka, including the required services, open source connectors and of course Lenses and Lenses CLI. Lenses Enterprisedoes not contain or is thight to any Kafka setup. You can configure it to connect to your own cluster. Lenses has simplified the deployment in cloud providers using its own provisioning and management cloud templates tailored to the particular cloud.

You may need to refresh your key from time to time for security reasons. Lenses is a Docker container that includes all required services for a Kafka Setup. The setup contains one instance of each service for example 1 Kafka broker, 1 Connect worker etc. For production environments it is recommended to have a multi-node setup for scalability and fail-over use cases.

Also, Lenses Box allows up to 25M records on the cluster. However, if you want to use Lenses Box with over 25M records or for a production deployment you will require a License. Kafka deployments often rely on additional software packages not included in the Kafka codebase itself—in particular, Apache ZooKeeper.

A comprehensive monitoring implementation includes all the layers of your deployment so you have visibility into your Kafka cluster and your ZooKeeper ensemble, as well as your producer and consumer applications and the hosts that run them all. To implement ongoing, meaningful monitoring, you will need a platform where you can collect and analyze your Kafka metrics, logs, and distributed request traces alongside monitoring data from the rest of your infrastructure.

With Datadog, you can collect metrics, logs, and traces from your Kafka deployment to visualize and alert on the performance of your entire Kafka stack.

Datadog automatically collects many of the key metrics discussed in Part 1 of this series, and makes them available in a template dashboard, as seen above. Before you begin, you must verify that Kafka is configured to report metrics via JMX. You should see data from the MBeans described in Part 1.

The Datadog Agent is open source software that collects metrics, logs, and distributed request traces from your hosts so that you can view and monitor them in Datadog. Installing the Agent usually takes just a single command. Install the Agent on each host in your deployment—your Kafka brokers, producers, and consumers, as well as each host in your ZooKeeper ensemble. Once the Agent is up and running, you should see each host reporting metrics in your Datadog account. Next you will need to create Agent configuration files for both Kafka and ZooKeeper.

There are also configurable notifiers that can send status out via email or HTTP calls to another service. It provides an intuitive UI that allows one to quickly view objects within a Kafka cluster as well as the messages stored in the topics of the cluster. It contains features geared towards both developers and administrators. I am afraid that you will not find any free products suitable for production environments but if you cannot afford it then go for Yahoo Kafka Manager, LinkedIn Burrow or KafDrop.

Confluent's and Landoop's products are the best out there but unfortunately, they require licensing. There are several free monitoring solutions, but all have their limitations. Confluent Control Center is perfectly suited to your requirement, however it does require a licence.

But, it's more of an administrative tool. Unfortunately, you can't use it to browse messages. It also requires access to ZooKeeper nodes, so you might not be able to use it in some production environments, where ZooKeeper nodes are typically firewalled. Edit application. It does not have a graphical user interface, and it does not have any cluster management capabilities.
